Title

The shooting approach to optimal control problems

Abstract

We will give an overview of the shooting technique for solving deterministic  optimal control problems. This is a way to reduce locally these problems to the one of solving finite dimensional equation.  After recalling the basic idea, we will focus on two cases that are now better undestood: state constrained problems, and affine control systems.

Biography

J. Frédéric Bonnans is senior researcher at Inria-Saclay and  associate professor in the Ecole Polytechnique, France. He leads the Inria teams "Commands" devoted to the study of numerical methods for solving deterministic or stochastic control problems. He belongs to the editorial board of four journals, and is the authors of four books (two of them in English, published by Springer) and 80 articles in international journals. He supervised or cosupervised 18 PhD thesis (four ongoing), several of them funded by companies, especially in the energy sector. Many of his recent contributions deal with the analysis of optimal control problems with either state constraints or singular arcs.
